MetaStock 20 requires 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11. If your PC shipped in the last several years and runs a current Windows, the download will install and run without ceremony. The old web is littered with MetaStock requirement pages quoting Windows XP, Vista and 256MB of RAM. Those describe versions from fifteen-plus years ago; ignore them. Equally, the hard lines today: no Windows 7 or 8, no 32-bit systems, no native macOS or Linux build, no Chromebooks or tablets. MetaStock is serious desktop software and it lives on the Windows desktop.

What "comfortable" looks like in practice

MetaStock's minimums are modest, and everyday charting is light work for any current machine. Where hardware starts to matter is the heavy tooling: the Explorer sweeping thousands of securities, and the System Tester grinding through years of history. From experience rather than the official spec sheet, our advice for a comfortable setup:

A multi-core processor from the last five or so years. Scans and backtests finish in coffee-sip time instead of make-a-coffee time.
8GB of RAM or more. Enough for MetaStock plus the browser and broker platform you will inevitably run beside it.
An SSD. The single cheapest upgrade for how snappy data-heavy software feels.
A second monitor. Not a requirement, but layouts spread across two screens are where MetaStock's workspace features start to shine.
A stable internet connection. Data arrives on demand. End-of-day use is undemanding; real-time R/T use deserves a reliable connection, since a dropped feed mid-session is its own kind of pain.

Running MetaStock on a Mac in 2026

There is no Mac version, and there never has been. What Mac users actually do is run Windows inside a virtual machine, most commonly Parallels Desktop on modern Apple Silicon Macs, and install MetaStock in that Windows environment. Plenty of traders work this way daily and report it working well, with the usual VM realities: you are buying and maintaining a Windows licence, giving the VM a healthy slice of RAM, and accepting that heavy scans lean on the virtualisation layer.

The honest caveat: MetaStock officially supports Windows PCs, not virtualised Mac setups. It generally works; it is not guaranteed to. Which is exactly why the 30-day trial is the right move for Mac users specifically: install the full version inside your VM and let your own machine give you the answer before any money is committed. If it runs the Explorer happily for a week, it will run it happily for years.

Older laptop, current Windows: charting will be fine; expect the System Tester to be leisurely on big jobs. Usable, not luxurious.

Work computer: corporate machines often block software installs and the ports data feeds use. Ask IT first, or use a personal machine.
